Packing a stone for international transit: what we do and why
A rare stone in poor packaging is an insurance claim waiting to happen. A short note on how Precision prepares every shipment.
by Zabeh Ullah
The packaging question is underestimated by buyers and sellers alike. A stone survives geological time and is destroyed in transit. This is preventable.
Faceted stones
Each stone travels in a stone paper or gem parcel, placed inside a rigid gem box with a foam insert, then packed inside a double-walled outer box with 3cm of padding on every side. Stones above $5,000 receive an additional security seal and a chain-of-custody document inside the box.
Mineral specimens
Specimens present different challenges. A crystalline matrix with delicate terminations requires foam cutouts molded to the specific piece — not generic bubble wrap. Each specimen is individually assessed for fragile points before packing. We have never had a specimen arrive broken.
Documentation
Every package ships with a full invoice, certificate of origin (where applicable), care instructions, and our contact information. The paperwork lives inside the outer box, not attached to the outside where it can be lost.
